The following year, 1983 saw another change for Sebring: it became part of the World Sports Prototype Championship that was run by IMSA GTO (International Motor Sports Association). This meant that Sebring joined other tracks like Le Mans and Daytona in hosting major sports car races such as this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The race was first held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1988 before moving to Long Beach in 1990 and then back to Indianapolis in 1991. In 2012, the race moved to Mexico City and was held there until last year’s race at COTA, which returned for this year’s event.
